I was speaking straight from the gut right there... let's just say it fails where it shouldn't have failed. Briefly: for a character driven film, the characters are terribly inorganic, they're like bundles of quirks and about as complex as a single-celled organism. Kinnear for instance is a loser who's obsessed with winning, but what else is there to this character? Seriously, is there anything else to him?
The plot sacrifices verisimilitude for the sake of laughs... the sequence with the policeman is terrible beyond words. Breakdowns and moments of emotional catharsis are predictably set up from the very beginning. There's just nothing to it. Ugh. You gimme your thoughts, then.
